While Savannah locals will argue that we have the largest St. Patrick's Day Parade in the United States, we actually have the second largest, coming in just behind New York City's! Not only is it one of the most popular annual events in Savannah, we strive to make it a family bonding experience while adult partying happens mainly on River Street and at City Market.

The Saint Patrick’s Day Parade Committee does a really good job of making it a family friendly event in order for everyone who comes out to get their green on to have a memorable and happy experience. This year marks the 189th annual parade here in Savannah and you can expect to see between 310-320 Navy units, the ever popular Clydesdales, bands from around the country, many high school bands, and plenty of pipes, drums, and Irish celebrating!

This year's parade is on Saturday, March 16th and starts at 10:15am. This annual celebration is religious as well as cultural, and also on Saturday morning, Mass is held at the Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist on Lafayette Square.

Parade Viewing Tips

  • Get there by 6:00am in order to secure a shady spot on one of the squares.
  • Get there by 7:00am in order to find a shady spot along the street route.
  • You can even reserve a bleacher seat in 3 prime parade viewing spots through Kelly Tours for $25-$40 per person. Prime spots are Bay Street, at Colonial Park Cemetery and at the cathedral.

Savannah's natural beauty is just one of the reasons why our area has become such a popular place to both live and visit. Steeped with history, charm, and an abundance of must-see places, there's no shortage of things to do or ways to experience Savannah!

Here's a look at some of Savannah's most popular attractions!

1. Savannah's Historic District
The Historic District is more than picturesque and brings the traditional southern atmosphere to life! A National Historic Landmark, the Historic District features 18th and 19th century architecture, walking areas, and you can even take group and bus tours.

2. Bonaventure Cemetery
Located on the scenic bluff of the Wilmington River, just east of Savannah, Bonaventure Cemetery has been a famous tourist destination for over 150 years. You'll find tree-lined roads, unique sculpture and architecture, and an abundance of natural beauty only found here in Savannah.

3. River Street Savannah
The Savannah Riverfront is one of the most visited places by Savannah area residents as well as tourists. It is considered one of the best ways to experience just a part of the beauty of Savannah and is home to several annual events, a variety of restaurants, shopping, nightlife, hotels, and so much more.

4. Forsyth Park

Looking for a place to spend the day just outside of the Savannah area? Tybee Island is about 25 minutes away and is a perfect place to take the family or a group of friends!

The Tybee Pier and Pavilion is one of the most popular attractions on Tybee Island and for good reason - the number of things you can do here are mind boggling!  No matter what your interests, age, or number of people in your party, there is a reason for anyone and everyone to keep coming back.  Located just off U.S. Highway 80 at the end of Tybrisa Street, the Tybee Pier and Pavilion also comes with a unique history that will intrigue even the most involved history buffs.

Built in 1891 by the Central of Georgia Railroad, the original Tybee Pier was called the Tybrisa Pavilion.  It stood as a landmark that attracted day-trippers and other seasonal visitors and eventually became a legendary stop on the “Big Band” tour for five decades of entertainers!  In 1967, a fire tragically destroyed the popular landmark where it was left to become just a memory in the hearts of all who had visited.  Thankfully, in 1996, the people of Tybee Island, Chatham County built the Tybrisa Pavilion II, which is what is known today as the Tybee Pier and Pavilion, a premier entertainment center.

Things to do at the Tybee Pier and Pavilion (which is free to the public I might add):

  • fishing
  • people watching
  • musical performances
  • dancing
  • special events
  • festivals
  • weddings
  • family reunions
  • social functions
  • having a picnic
  • watching fireworks
  • ocean viewing
  • dolphin watching
  • shopping just steps away
  • eating at the restaurants that are just steps away

Spending the day in Tybee Island is just one of the day trips you can take with your family or friends that will take you out of Savannah to experience something new. Don't want to visit Tybee? Stay in Savannah and experience the area with one of these 3 unique tours!

Changing a few small things about your lifestyle can help you start to live a little bit greener. Here are some inexpensive, and some free, ways to save energy around your home, and keep more of your hard earned money in your pocket!

1. Wash your clothes in cold water. Heating the water is what uses the majority of the energy. In fact, some detergents are even designed to work best with cold water so you can use less energy.

2. In the summer, hang your clothes outside to dry instead of using the dryer. When you bring them inside, toss them in the dryer for about 5 minutes to fluff them. Again, you'll reduce the amount of energy you use and your clothes will have that fresh-air smell!

3. Walk instead of drive whenever possible. Not only is this a wonderful form of daily exercise, you won't be putting gas in your vehicle every other day and you'll be keeping some green in your pocket!  If walking isn't an option, try to find someone you can carpool with or take public transportation.

4. Plant trees around your home, office, etc. The world can never have enough trees, so plant away! Trees are inexpensive, require little maintenance, and act as filters by removing air pollution from the atmosphere. Having plants in your home is a great way to improve the air quality too, not to mention it can be relaxing to water them and an excuse to take a break!

5. Shop at your local farmer's market instead of a chain grocery store. Not only will your produce be cheaper, but you will be supporting members of your local community. An added benefit is that less pesticides are used because the produce does not have to travel long distances. If you live here in Savannah, the Forsyth Farmer's Market is one of the best!

These 5 simple ways to start living a green lifestyle will not only help you reduce the amount of energy you use, but you will save money on your electric bill, foods, and car maintenance.

I would love to hear about the ways you live a green lifestyle, please tell me about them in the comment box below!
