This year marks the 20th anniversary of the largest fundraiser of the year for the American Diabetes Association and the Savannah office is committed to educating the public about how to stop diabetes and support those living with the disease.
This unique event creates diabetes awareness and raises funds for the mission of the Association, which is to prevent and cure diabetes and to improve the lives of all people affected by diabetes. This year's Kiss-a-Pig Campaign has been dubbed "SOWvivor" and is presented by Piggly Wiggly. The celebratory gala "Escape to Pig Island" will be held on Saturday, May 19th at 7:00pm at the Hyatt Regency Ballroom in Savananh.

For some, it may be easy to replace such things as a window, fix a leaky faucet, or make layout changes, but for the rest of us, hiring a contractor is a necessity. To ensure your receive the best quality of workmanship and service, it is important to choose the right person(s) to get the job done, as a top priority among home owners is maintaining not only the look, but the "health" of the overall structure.
Here are some tips for choosing the right contractor for your home:
Ask for References. Talk with others who have had work done by the contractor. Find out about his capabilities and quality of workmanship. The best advice you will get is from someone who has a history with the contractor.
Ask to see the Contractors Work. Take advantage of social networks like Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn to research the contractor on your own. Their on-line presence will tell you a lot about the contractors quality of work, as well as a little character too!
Ask for the Insurance Certificate. Licensed contractors will have an insurance certificate that verifies current workers compensation and general liability insurance, but note that contractors without employees are not required to carry workers compensation insurance. Verifying this information could prove to be vital in the event of a problem.
Ensure there will be a Written Contract. Always insist on a written contract, and be sure to incorporate any warranties, guarantees, or other special circumstances.
Get Estimated Start and Completion Dates. Be realistic when thinking about the start and end dates, and if the timing doesn't sound right to you, ask the contractor to explain in further detail the reason for his suggested time.
Beware of an Unusually Low Cost Estimate. The age old adage, "if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is," applies here. You shouldn't always choose the contractor with the lowest bid, as the quality of work may not be what you are hoping for. Make sure to do the proper research in determining what kind of materials will be used or what types of other labor is needed in order to choose the contractor.
Choose a Contractor you are Comfortable with. The entire home improvement process will be less stressful if you choose a contractor whom you've connected with in some way. A contractor should be able to express to you that he understands your tastes and needs to finish with the best result.
Always make sure to do the proper research when hiring an outside party to provide home maintenance and improvements, as a bad experience can lead to a decrease in the value of your home.
What suggestions do you have for home owners who need to hire a contractor?

Savannah-Chatham County Public School System - serving Savannah, Pooler, and Pt Wentworth
State School Superintendent Dr. John Barge announced the finalists for 2013 Georgia Teacher of the Year and for the third year in a row Savannah-Chatham’s Teacher of the Year has been named a state finalist! In Savannah-Chatham, selecting the district’s Teacher of the Year comes as a year-long effort that combines an intensive application process, panel interviews, and classroom observations.
"This is truly a great accomplishment for Mrs. Konter and one that we can all take pride in. The Teacher of the Year program is a major highlight for our district and this community. It showcases the dedicated, and very talented, educators that serve our children each day," said Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Thomas Lockamy. "The state level recognition is representative of the high quality teachers found throughout all schools in Savannah-Chatham County."
Here's an example of how the school system is making changes to better the education of the area students:
Construction has begun for the new wing of the Largo-Tibet Elementary School. The addition to the school will be among one of the many facility upgrades taking place in Savannah-Chatham County funded by ESPLOST. The new wing is 13,200 Square Feet of free standing addition that is suited for 12 classrooms (K-1st). It will include a teacher’s resource suite including conference/work room, and support areas (custodial, storage, electrical, and data server rooms). New classrooms are built to support the latest technology employed by SCCPSS. An energy efficient mechanical system will be installed. Also, a new canopy will connect the existing campus and bus canopy plus all data, fire alarm, and intercom systems will connect back to the existing facilities.
